Bora Bora, an island located in the Leeward group of the Society Islands of French Polynesia is located in Pacific Ocean. Lying northwest of Papeete it is surrounded by a lagoon and a barrier reef. Remnants of an extinct volcano rising in two peaks are located in the center of the island.
Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu are the highest points at 727 meters. The original name of the island in Tahitian language was Pora Pora, meaning "First Born" and the early transcription in 18th century accounts spells it as Bollabolla.
Most of the tourist attractions in Bora Bora are water based. You have snorkeling and scuba diving in and around the lago on. Many species of sharks and rays inhabit the waters. The other attraction on the island is the WWII cannons.
The island mainly dependent on tourism has several resorts built on motu or small islands surrounding the lagoon.
