Culture & Tradition Of Bora Bora |
|
The natives of Bora Bora carry on with their traditional culture, myths and legends that come down from their Polynesian heritage. Ancient folklore influences their way of living and at heart they live like the Lotus Eaters with their philosophy of ‘Aita Pea Pea – meaning Not to Worry.
The culture includes traditional song and dance that the islanders share during celebrations with visitors. During festivals women adorn themselves with leis and hei –garlands and crowns made of tropical flowers. The desire for natural adornments is deep rooted in Polynesian culture.
The arrival of Protestant missionaries followed by conversion in the 19th century saw the destruction of numerous ancient marae or sacred stone temples. But although 150 years have passed since conversion, certain native traditions still prevail.
A stroll along the main settlement of Vaitape Village at the base of Mount Pahia will provide glimpses of present culture of the natives. Bora Bora is dotted with marae, ancient stone constructions once used for prayer or sacrifice. Bora Bora has several outstanding marae. |
